AVID

Lake Air Montessori offers AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program for middle school students 6th-8th. AVID is a nationally recognized program that helps students develop the skills they need to be successful in school, college, and life.
AVID is a college and career readiness system that:
- Supports students with potential who may need extra tools to thrive academically
- Teaches skills like organization, time management, goal-setting, and study strategies
- Help students develop a growth mindset and self-confidence
- Prepares students for rigorous high school course and college planning
What happens in AVID Elective Class?
- Learn and practice note-taking (Cornell notes), time management, and test preparation
- Engage in team-building, leadership, and public speaking activities
- Go on college field trips, attend career talks, and explore postsecondary options
- Build a strong peer support system and academic community
Who is AVID for?
- Are motivated to do well and willing to work hard
- May benefit from extra support, structure, or encouragement
- Have average to above-average test scores and GPA
- Show potential to succeed in honors or advanced coursework with support
- AVID is not a remedial program- it's about helping students achieve their full academic potential
How do students join?
- Students may be recommended by teachers, apply, or request to be considered
- Selection may involve an application, interview, and teacher recommendations
- AVID is an elective course that is taken during the school day, just like band, art, or other elective
